Is technology really going to be the demise of society as we know it?
Wall-E is a movie that gives subtle hints of what type of future today's society may be headed for. The representation in the movie is a little extreme in my opinion. Though many people in society choose the easy way to complete many tasks and are addicted to mass media and technology they are still only a percentage For every fad there are people that immune to the widely popular. Every individuals have core values that can be changed by what is thought to be popular at the time or even by society as a whole.
The individuals in this movie are consumed 24/7 by the internet and other sources of media. They have everyday routines which really never alter. The people of this society only consume which I think is the real moral of the story. A society which only consumes will eventually be it's own downfall.
What this clip does show is a very plausible future if we continue strongly on the path of self-complacency. Mainly an issue in the United States, many have become maybe too comfortable in their everyday lives. Becoming too complacent leads to not really having any individual thoughts adding to the mindless masses. Without individual thoughts it becomes easier for the government and media to produce and act in ways they normally wouldn't, mainly the government. All ready there are laws in place that allow detainment without fair trial and without the aware people that exist in the country even the internet was in danger of being moderated.
The two men chatting with each other over the internet even though they are in close proximity is very representative of many people in our culture today. For example two people will sit and text each other even though they're sitting across the same table. Or instead of physically visiting someone a person will make a phone call or leave a Facebook comment even. This scene in Wall-E really shows the distance between individuals in today's society. How far we have come to rely on technology for most social interaction.
