Entry #4: The Truth in Agriculture.

Food. All of us need it, most of us like it, and almost all of us don't think twice of as to the source it comes from. Food Inc. makes open your eyes and face what is really happening in the food industry.

No one particularly expects these disgusting and inhumane practices "behind the scenes" of food production.
I grew up to believe that chickens pecked around on farms and cows to be grazing on the hills of grass. Pigs are oinking around in the mud like my storybooks. The harsh reality Food Inc. presents is how the business of food really is.
One of the most appalling thing to me was the treatment of the animals to be slaughtered.  Now with bigger demand comes the need for a bigger supply. Each animal needs a certain amount of space to be kept, an amount of time for care. With such a large amount of animals in one place the animals get the short end of the deal by being put into these small areas and cages basically on top of each other.
This causes widespread disease and injuries among the stock with is so large now there is not enough staff for individual care. The companies then in return start to inject the animals with hormones to keep them healthy. Another living being's life and care shouldn't be treated as a procedure like at these big slaughterhouses and factories. The animals should have the proper room to roam and be allowed to naturally mature without said hormones and other injections. Not to mention how the stressed animals cause more disease and produce bad meat.
The family farm is near extinct along with it's practices. These farmers take care of these animals individually giving specific care. With smaller amounts of animals to take care of, local farms are shown as having more time and patience when growing their livestock.

The animals aren't the only one's being mistreated. These business's employees suffer as well and almost to the same degree of the animals. Just to earn a living these people are subjected to multiple hazardous chemicals, dangerous processes, and an array of diseases which they would have never otherwise developed. To feed their families they have to literally risk their health just to maintain a low-wage job. No one should ever have to risk their lives with really no other options of surviving.
Along with the factory workers, farmers are not immune to abuse from these corporations. Farmers are now in debt and being harassed and sued for simply doing their job which has existed since the beginning of time. They have to now buy seeds and aren't allowed to keep any of the turnover ones without being sued for extreme amounts. Farmers live in fear of tending their crops because of a natural process. Farming is no longer the wholesome, hardworking, worry free lifestyle it used to be.

These along with many more atrocities are now active in our agriculture system. This documentary highlights the fact that we all have the power to change this corrupt system and to of course be mindful of what you eat.
