Entry #5: This Is Really Gross.

First off learning what pink slime really is will not only ruin your appetite for the next few days, or months.

What actually is pink slime? Apparently it is a mix of the meat and bone leftovers of the cow after it is slaughtered.

These leftover parts of the cow are usually found in dog food due to the fact that dogs have better stomachs than we do.
The leftover parts are then subjected to a process that involves getting all of the meat parts from this bone/meat mixture. The parts are literally beat  together until the meat falls off.

After the meat has been salvaged it is then washed in an ammonia solution to kill off all the the salmonella and e.coli  that has now formed on the meat. A household chemical is used on meat intended for human consumption.

Now think about the fact that this Pink Slime is allowed by the USDA to be in your food. The food you eat everyday.

This causes a major freak out. First is the feeling of panic because now you are considering starving to death. Currently your main concern is that this Pink Slime is bad and it's in 70% of your country's meat. A question comes to mind that "how do I avoid this Pink Slime?". There has to be a solution to this problem, right?

The first option is to maybe buy your meat from an actual butcher to insure where your meat came from. This process is quite pricey and time consuming to say the least. What I got from this information about pink slime is that I personally don't know of any butcher's in my area but I'm sure I can substitute grounding my own beef.
