Why Courage The Cowardly Dog Was Totally Messed Up.

If anyone else watches cartoons you might have heard of the Cartoon Network show Courage the cowardly dog. The series ran from November 12, 1999, to November 22, 2002. Let me start out by saying this show scared the crud out of me when I was younger. I was absolutely terrified of it. Now that it's recently been added to Netflix I can finally see why this show frightened me so much.

To start out the first episode is about a cat that runs a motel in the middle of nowhere. An elderly couple comes to check in at a motel at the end of their vacation with their dog Courage. We quickly learn that Courage is ironically cowardly to have such a name.
Not only does this cat talk and have a general creepy disposition, but it's motel rule is no dogs allowed. This ends up as Courage having to sleep outside away from his masters Eustice and Muriel. The creepy cat also mentions that nobody leaves the Katz Motel alive.

Now for the reason that nobody leaves the motel alive, GIANT FREAKING SPIDERS. These giant spiders feed on people and crawl through air vents, shower heads, and are ridiculously hard to kill. These spiders are like the cat's pets that he feeds customers. He lets them out at night to feed on the guests and of course has one for their pets as well. This cat is pretty messed up.

Courage now has to play some kind of wall-ball in competition with the cat to save his masters which actually fair very well on their own. Muriel beats down a bathtub spider and knocks out the cat to then leave the hotel with Eustice still fast asleep.
And let's not add the fact that the room number is 666 1/2. This show is written right from my nightmares.

  1. I LOVE COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG! A classic most definitely. I also recently noticed how Netflix acquired it along with other great classics! (They must've struck a deal with Cartoon Network as it seems.) I've yet to confirm if the collection of episodes are complete. I really hope they are.

I remember that episode you wrote about; though wasn't the first episode really the one with alien chickens visiting Courage's "farm" home in Nowhere? I don't totally remember, but when that episode showed, Courage the Cowardly Dog might've not had it's own show yet. I think it was part of some show of a collection of different mini-shows if you get what I mean.

  2. You provide a thorough summary of the episode in question. The next step is to think critically about what scared you, why this cartoon was successful, and consider connections to the bigger pictures of TV, entertainment, etc.
